Galveston Truvada Attorneys
When Truvada became available to the general public, its claims that it would suppress HIV symptoms and prevent people from contracting the virus was good news to many people with HIV and people who were at risk for contracting HIV.
Unfortunately, many people who began using the drug discovered, at the beginning of the 21st century, that it had painful and debilitating side effects and that it was not as effective as it was advertised to be.
Today, many people in the Galveston area who originally turned to Truvada for HIV management are now turning to attorneys to help them take legal action against the pharmaceutical company responsible for the negative side effects of the drug.
Harmful Side Effects of Truvada
The most common side effects of Truvada are kidney damage and bone degeneration, though people who take the drug also report:
- Chronic kidney disease
- Decreased kidney function
- Acute kidney injury
- Acute renal failure
- Fanconi Syndrome
- Kidney failure
- Pain in extremities
- Decreased bone mineral density
- Bone deterioration
- Tooth decay
- Bone fractures
- Lactic acidosis
Truvada causes these negative side effects because of its use of the active ingredient TDF and FTC. Truvada utilizes these antivirals to suppress HIV and AIDs. They reduce the production of the enzyme called reverse transcriptase which causes HIV-infected cells to replicate. Unfortunately, the TDF ingredient is also linked to the harmful side effects of Truvada.

What is the Truvada Lawsuit About?
Unfortunately, the Truvada story is not just one where an active ingredient in a drug caused harmful side effects without the knowledge of the pharmaceutical team who developed the medication.
Many lawsuits have been filed against the company, Gilead Sciences, Inc., for the choices they allegedly made that put patients’ lives, safety, and wellbeing at stake.
Though the story is long and complicated, it can be summed up as follows.
In the 1980s, intravenous HIV drugs using the TDF component of Truvada were approved by the FDA and were made available to the general public. In the following years, Truvada was developed and became the oral drug that was prescribed to treat and prevent HIV.
Gilead Sciences, Inc., the makers of the drug, patented their product. The patent for the TDF Truvada drug expired in 2018.
Yet shortly after the drug was made, Gilead Sciences, Inc. allegedly realized that the drug would cause kidney and bone damage in patients due to TDF. In addition, their own medical researchers realized that there was an equivalent drug that could be manufactured using TAF (a safer ingredient) rather than TDF.
This new drug was more effective at treating HIV, less harmful, as it did not cause negative side effects, and would also cost consumers less because it was less expensive to manufacture.
This cheaper and more effective active ingredient, like TDF and FTC, reduces the production of the enzyme that causes HIV-infected cells to replicate. But TAF also better suppresses HIV/AIDs and does so without the harmful side effects that TDF produces.
Instead of moving forward to develop the new drug, however, Gilead Sciences, Inc. allegedly suppressed research related to the TAF medication and continued to advertise and produce the TDF Truvada until the patent expired. This is because patients paid more for Truvada and the pharmaceutical company made big profits off the patented version of the drug.
There have been many lawsuits in Galveston and across the country since the turn of the century that blamed Truvada for causing extensive skeletal and kidney damage to people who had used the drug. What is just as bad is that many HIV patients could have benefited health-wise and financially from taking the drug made with TAF, if Gilead Sciences, Inc. had not suppressed its development.
Most of the personal injury claims against Gilead Sciences, Inc. include the suppression of the manufacture of the TAF drug and the pharmaceutical company’s failure to warn patients about the harmful side effects of Truvada.
What Kind of Compensation are Truvada Victims Eligible For?
If you or someone you loved suffered because you took Truvada, you may be eligible to seek several types of compensation, including any of the following:
- Medical bill compensation. Claimants commonly receive settlements to compensate for the medical expense they incur for treatment for their illnesses and injuries that are related to taking Truvada.
- Lost wages. You may be entitled to compensation based on your lost wages. Many Truvada victims experience such serious illnesses or injuries that they either lose a significant amount of time from work for medical treatment or they can no longer work at all. Any documented time that you have lost or may lose from work may be compensated.
- Pain and suffering. You may be awarded a settlement based on a quantitative evaluation of the pain and suffering you have and are experiencing because you took Truvada. Because Truvada patients didn’t have to suffer from side effects that made them ill or injured them because there was a safer and more effective alternative drug that they could have taken, compensation is available.
- Loss of enjoyment of life. This type of compensation can be awarded to individuals who have such debilitating side effects from taking Truvada that it interferes with their daily lives and activities.
You may also be entitled to punitive damages. In this case, a Galveston court can choose to compensate you with punitive damages taken from Gilead Sciences, Inc., so that you get the justice you deserve and to warn other pharmaceutical or research companies about doing something similar to what Gilead Sciences, Inc. did in the future.
Punitive damages are available if the defendant is found guilty of malice, fraud, or gross negligence.
